FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Fundraiser to be Held for Artist Injured in Long Island City Accident
New York, NY July 6, 2009 –
Friends and studiomates of Nicole Gagne, an artist critically injured in the April 10th staircase collapse at Crane Street Studios in Long Island City, NY, have organized an event to raise funds for Nicole’s immediate expenses. “Benefit for Nicole: A Postcard Show” is a single-evening exhibition and sale of postcard-sized artwork, to be held at the Chelsea gallery of Priska C. Juschka Fine Art from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on Thursday July 30, 2009. The works will be sold for $40.00 each at this cash and carry event.
Nicole Gagne, a jeweler who markets her work under the moniker leoworks, has played a critical role in uniting the Crane Street Studios community. By organizing the twice yearly Open Studios, she brought visibility and accessibility to a space normally isolated from the surrounding community. Her enthusiasm for the community compelled her peers to take action when Nicole became injured.
“Benefit for Nicole: A Postcard Show” asked artists to draw on their own experiences of making art. The exhibition call for 4” x 6” works went out to the New York, national, and international artist communities at large. The resulting art pieces were donated to the exhibition in order to raise funds for Nicole Gagne. Thus far, dozens of local and global artists have responded to the appeal for art.
Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is located at:
547 West 27th Street, 2nd Floor
(between 10th & 11th Avenues)
New York, NY 10001

"Crane Street Studios, Petition for Tenant Advocacy to End Mandatory Vacate"

We are the artist & artist related business tenants of the cluster of buildings located between Davis & Crane Streets, bordering Jackson Av., in Long Island City, New York. We are the largest, or one of the largest, artist enclaves in New York City with more than 300 tenants & have for more than a decade significantly contributed to the richness of the local community.
Our building is under a mandatory vacate & inspection by the City of New York. Worst case, we may not be able to return to our businesses other than to remove our effects. Each day that goes by we are losing income, business & artistic opportunities that are critical to our livelihood & that contribute to a disintegrating community.
We ask you to join us in an effort to regain our tenancy by signing this petition. The collective petitions will be distributed to political leadership of New York City in an effort to expedite the decision making process in anticipation of a favorable solution for our landlord & ourselves.
Please go to this link to sign this pettition!
